Trauma Research

Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation Funded the Grant below starting Jan 2007- Dec 2009

PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT IN TRAUMA PATIENTS WITHOUT CLOSED HEAD INJURY

The purpose of this study is to determine if patients who have had multiple trauma with an injury severity score greater than 25, but did not have a closed head injury, have long-term cognitive deficits in the domains of mental processing speed, memory, executive function, and visuo-construction abilities.  We will also assess what specific injuries (concussion/skull fractures, long bone fractures), treatment (IMN) or interventions (sedation and mechanical ventilation) in these patients may be predictors of long-term cognitive deficits in this prospective cohort.  Approximately 100 patients meeting inclusion criteria will be followed during their ICU stay and will be tested at 12 months for long-term cognitive function and quality of life outcomes.

Costs Requested for Each Year:
YEAR 1 $49,980     YEAR 2  $47,530
