photo of Dr. SpenglerDr. Spengler received his MD degree from the University of Michigan. After serving an internship at King County Hospital (Harborview Medical Center), he completed the Orthopaedic program at the University of Michigan Medical Center. After a one-year fellowship in Orthopaedic Biomechanics, Dr. Spengler joined the faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle. Nine years later he relocated to Nashville where he has served as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt since 1983.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Spengler runs a busy adult spine practice with a focus on the surgical management of patients who have a variety of spinal injuries and disorders. He is involved in clinical and research projects, which range from the composition of the intervertebral disc to clinical outcome studies on patients with low back disorders. He has received the Volvo Award for Low Back Research in 1990, the Kappa Delta Award for outstanding Orthopaedic Research in 1991, and the Cervical Spine Research Award in 1998. Dr. Spengler remains active in a number of national and international orthopaedic organizations. He has served as a director for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons including the office of president of the ABOS in 1993-1994. Dr. Spengler has recently been elected as the second president-elect for the American Orthopaedic Association.

Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Surgery - Minimally Invasive Spine Center

Dr. Davis is the Director of the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Surgery's Minimally Invasive Spine Center which aims to treat leg and low back pain (disc herniations, spinal stenosis, discogenic pain) using microsurgical techniques. He has a particular interest in cervical spine problems and minimally invasive spine surgery. His research interests include clinical outcome studies that determine the effectiveness of non-operative and operative spine treatment.

Dr. Davis attended medical school at Georgetown University and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Wisconsin in 2003. He completed a Cervical and Lumbar Spine Surgery Fellowship in 2004 at the University of Pittsburgh, where he received specialized training in cervical spine disorders and microsurgical techniques.

Dr. Davis enjoys playing golf and hockey. He and his wife, Beth have one child.

Dr. Mencio graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Pittsburgh in 1983 and his orthopaedic residency at Duke University in 1987. He completed his Fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics from Newington Children's Hospital from 1987-88.

His clinical interests include: Pediatric orthopaedic trauma, scoliosis & spinal deformity, limb lengthening, cerebral palsy and gait analysis.
