Health Care Plan
As a full-time staff member working at least 30 hours per week,
you are eligible for Vanderbilt's
total Health Care Plan. Vanderbilt offers three health care
options. Eligible faculty and staff may choose Blue Cross Preferred,
CIGNA PPO, or Blue Cross S Plan. All plans are Preferred Provider
Organizations (PPO), which pay both in-network and out-of-network
benefits. Vanderbilt pays the same dollar amount toward the
cost of each plan. Other benefits included in the Health Care
Plan include a Vanderbilt University Hospital discount and two
health care reimbursement accounts. In addition, you may choose
between two Dental Care plans.
Insurance
Group Term Life Insurance
Group Term Life insurance coverage is available three months from the day employment begins.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance is available immediately, effective the first of the month following enrollment.
Other Benefits
Full-time employees have certain other benefits which are provided automatically or after satisfaction of specified conditions and waiting period, including worker's compensation, travel insurance, long-term disability insurance and retirement insurance.
Leave Policies
Bereavement Leave
Up to three days of paid leave may be used in cases of death in the immediate family. Immediate family is defined as father, mother, spouse, son, daughter, sister, brother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, grandfather, and grandmother.
Maternity Leave
This medical leave is for childbirth and pregnancy-related conditions. This is considered leave without pay; however, if there is accumulated sick leave, sick leave may be used as income during disability. Accumulated vacation time may also be used prior to this medical leave.
Sick Leave
House officers earn one working day of sick leave with pay for each month of service, beginning on the date of employment. There is no limit to the total number of sick days that may be accumulated but you may only use accrued sick time unless you become eligible to receive long-term disability insurance benefits.
Vacation
First-year residents (interns) are entitled to two weeks of vacation which must be taken sequentially during the Vanderbilt ER rotation. Second year residents and beyond are entitled to three weeks vacation per year.
Professional Liability Coverage
Vanderbilt Hospital provides, at no cost to the house officer, professional liability insurance. This protection is in effect when working at Vanderbilt or while on rotation in one of the affiliated hospital programs. Professional liability insurance is not provided for "moonlighting," which is prohibited in the orthopaedic residency program.
Uniforms and Laundry
The Hospital provides and launders eight uniforms for each house officer at no charge. The laundry does not process personal clothing. Uniforms must be returned to the linen room at the completion of service.
Keys and Xeroxing
Residents are supplied by the Department of Orthopaedics with keys to the Orthopaedic Library and to the A.L. Brooks Center. In addition, coupons for xeroxing in the Eskind Biomedical Library may be obtained. The central library should not be used to copy material from journals that are available in the orthopaedic library.
Meal Tickets
The Hospital provides sleeping quarters and a $7.50 meal ticket for each night a resident is on call.
Drugs
The Hospital will provide the house officer and his/her bona fide dependents with drugs that can be obtained free-of-charge from pharmaceutical companies.
