Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship
View a letter from Philip Kregor, MD
(Director of the Division of Orthopaedic Trauma)
The purpose of this fellowship is to provide in-depth exposure over a period of one year to the surgical subspecialty of orthopaedic trauma. This fellowship requires completion of an accredited residency in orthopaedic surgery. The experience will prepare an individual for active participation in a Level I or II trauma center as well as for education of orthopaedic or surgery residents in an accredited residency training program that deals with a large volume of orthopaedic trauma.
The goals of this fellowship are both clinical and scientific. The clinical goal is to provide a setting where the fellow may actively participate in the diagnosis and treatment of a large number of acute orthopaedic trauma cases. The distinct emphasis will be placed on the care of the multiply injured patient by providing an opportunity to work as part of a team during evaluation and treatment of polytrauma patients with multiple organ system problems. Comprehensive exposure to the entire spectrum of musculoskeletal trauma will be provided. The fellow will participate in decision-making and operative management of patients with multisystem trauma utilizing techniques of internal and external fixation. Exposure to spine trauma, techniques of post-traumatic reconstruction, and rehabilitation will be provided as well. Exposure to traumatic injuries in both the pediatric and the adult patient will be provided.
The scientific mission is to create an environment wherein the fellow can make a contribution to the body of scientific knowledge relating to the orthopaedic trauma patient. This endeavor may involve either a clinical or basic science research project. Active laboratory facilities are available utilizing both the VA Medical Center and Vanderbilt University facilities under the supervision of orthopaedic surgery faculty and the direction of Herbert Schwartz, M.D., Director of Orthopaedic Research. Access to laboratories containing basic science research equipment, cadaver material, and facilities for animal research is available. Also provided is the opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects as well as in the development of original research projects. Adequate time and resources will be made available to complete a study suitable for presentation and publication in a major journal.

This is a one-year fellowship that will deal primarily with active involvement in acute orthopaedic trauma and post-traumatic reconstructive practice at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The fellow will be involved with patient care beginning in the emergency room following through the operating room and into the clinic for outpatient evaluation. All aspects of fellow interaction will be directly supervised by fellowship-trained orthopaedic traumatologists at Vanderbilt University. The fellow will be appointed as an Instructor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation and will be considered a junior faculty member. The fellow will alternate clinical and research responsibilities on an every three month basis. At the completion of the fellowship, the individual will be required to have completed a research project, the quality of which will allow its presentation in a major scientific journal.
