As defined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education,
orthopaedic surgery is the medical specialty that includes the investigation,
preservation, and restoration of the form and function of the extremities,
spine, and associated structures by medical, surgical, and physical
means.

The Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine offers fellowship programs in seven orthopaedic subspecialty areas:

The goals of the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic
fellowship program are both clinical and scientific. The program
provides a setting where an individual who has completed an accredited
residency in orthopaedic surgery may participate actively in the
diagnosis and treatment of a large variety of orthopaedic disorders
in a particular subspecialty area. In addition, the fellow is afforded
an opportunity to make a contribution to the body of knowledge relating
to his or her subspecialty.
