Vanderbilt University Medical Center is dedicated to the care and treatment of a very large population of patients who are diagnosed with type I and type II diabetes mellitus.
Whereas the primary care for these patients is provided by Internal Medicine/Endocrinology, a definite need exists for orthopaedic input, particularly for diabetic foot complications. Close cooperation between the primary care physicians and this orthopaedic foot-care program facilitates the appropriate care for individuals with diabetic foot problems. Debridement of hyperkeratotic lesions and diabetic neuropathic and dysvascular ulcerations, along with the use of total contact casts and other orthopaedic appliances are essential functions of the Diabetic Foot-Care Program. The prescription of appropriate shoes, orthotic devices, and custom-fabricated appliances is accomplished with thoughtful consideration for each patient.
